What Minnesota offers by degree level

The distribution below matters for planning. Most states are dominated by accredited associate programs, which lead to RHIT, and have far fewer bachelor programs, which lead to RHIA and to management. If Minnesota is thin at the level you need, an accredited online program based elsewhere confers identical eligibility.

What the work pays in Minnesota

The occupation most graduates enter is Medical Records Specialists, SOC 29-2072. In Minnesota the median is $61,530, 20% above the national median of $51,140, per BLS Occupational Employment and Wage Statistics, May 2025.

Read that federal figure carefully. It blends entry clerical roles with credentialed specialists and excludes management roles, which sit in a different occupation code. Where Minnesota graduates get hired

Hospitals and health systems remain the largest employer of health information professionals in every state, but they are not the only one and frequently not the best paid. Physician groups and ambulatory networks are the fastest growing employer of this credential. Payers, meaning insurers and managed care organizations, hire heavily for coding audit, risk adjustment, and analytics, and generally pay above provider organizations for equivalent work.

Remote work matters enormously here and it has changed the calculation for residents of lower-wage states. Coding, clinical documentation integrity, auditing, and much analytics work is now performed remotely at scale, which means a professional in Minnesota working for a health system headquartered elsewhere is frequently paid closer to the employer's rate than the local one. That is one of the strongest arguments for targeting the remote-capable specializations rather than staying in on-site records work.

The credential pathway from Minnesota

Whichever program you choose, the credential sequence is the same everywhere, because AHIMA sets it nationally and it does not vary by state. This is worth understanding before you compare programs, because it determines which degree level you actually need rather than which one sounds better.

An accredited associate degree makes you eligible for RHIT, the technical credential that opens hospital specialist and coding roles. An accredited bachelor or master degree makes you eligible for RHIA, the management credential that most health information management postings name directly. There is no experience-based route to either exam, so the degree you complete determines the credential available to you, permanently.

Step two is where Minnesota residents lose the most ground, and it has nothing to do with local conditions. Certification pass rates are meaningfully higher for candidates who test within six months of graduating, because the exams cover the breadth of an entire accredited curriculum. Cost and funding for Minnesota students

Cost is the single largest variable in whether this degree pays off, and it is the one national rankings represent worst. Two CAHIIM-accredited programs at the same level confer identical exam eligibility, so paying four times as much for one of them requires a justification the program should be able to give you.

The most cost-efficient route in this field is consistent across states: an accredited associate degree at a community college, frequently under $12,000 in total, followed by RHIT and employment, then an online bachelor completion program often supported by employer tuition assistance. That reaches RHIA at a fraction of the cost of a four-year degree, with two fewer years out of the workforce.

• Compare net cost after aid rather than published tuition, and get the figure in writing.
• Check in-state residency requirements, which can change the number substantially at public institutions.
• Ask whether the program has employer partners who fund tuition for working students.
• If you already work in healthcare, ask your employer about tuition assistance before you apply anywhere.
• Factor certification exam fees, roughly $229 for RHIT or $299 for RHIA at member rates, into the total.

What this means for you in Minnesota

Pulling the Minnesota picture together into decisions rather than facts. The wage data, the program count, and the delivery formats above all point at the same handful of moves.

Accreditation first, geography second. Minnesota has 11 accredited programs, and all of them appear on this page. Any program not listed here should be checked against the accreditor's own directory before you consider it. Ask about practicum placement before you enrol. A note on comparing Minnesota against other states

It is tempting to read a state wage table as a ranking of where to build a career. It is not one, for two reasons worth stating plainly.

The first is cost of living. A nominal median that looks strong in a high-cost state can represent less purchasing power than a lower figure elsewhere, and none of the federal figures on this page are adjusted for it. Compare adjusted numbers, or compare against local housing costs directly, before drawing a conclusion about where you would actually be better off.

The second is that the occupation mix differs by state. A state with a large academic medical center presence has more informatics and analytics roles; a state dominated by small rural facilities has proportionally more generalist HIM work. Two states with identical medians can offer very different ceilings, and the ceiling matters more over a career than the median does.
