HIMDegree.com ranks 328 CAHIIM-accredited health information programs using a seven-factor Program Quality Index: curriculum rigor (18%), practicum and internship requirements (17%), faculty credentials (15%), program accreditation status (15%), technology and software training (15%), career outcomes (10%), and cost value (10%). Every input comes from data published by the institution or by CAHIIM, so any score is reproducible from the program record. Our proprietary research includes the Health Information Management Career Outcomes Survey 2026, covering 1,127 graduates from the classes of 2020 through 2025, fielded January to March 2026, and the HIM Program Quality Index 2026 evaluating 189 programs. Most rankings in this field are reputation surveys with a numerical coating. Reputation measures how old and how large an institution is, which is not information a student needs. We score documented attributes, publish the weights, and link every program to its own page. You can disagree with our weighting, and that is a more useful argument than any you can have with a reputation score.
The Program Quality Index
One hundred points across seven factors. Every factor is derived from something the institution or CAHIIM publishes about the program, which means a score is reproducible from the record itself and any disagreement can be specific rather than vague.

How each factor is computed
Curriculum rigor (18%) is scored primarily from credential level, since the accredited curriculum required at each level is defined by CAHIIM standards, with an adjustment for programs documenting a specific subject focus rather than a generic title.
Practicum and internship requirements (17%) uses documented delivery format as the proxy. Campus-capable programs score highest because a placed practicum is more reliably arranged when an institution has a local presence and existing employer relationships. Fully online programs score lower here, not because online delivery is inferior, but because placement is the component most likely to be left to the student.
Faculty credentials (15%) scores the named program director's published credential stack: doctoral qualification, RHIA or RHIT, and AHIMA fellowship. Programs that do not publish a named director with credentials score lower, deliberately, because that opacity is itself a signal.
Accreditation status (15%) combines CAHIIM status with the review horizon. Continuing accreditation scores above Initial, and a review scheduled further out scores higher, since long review cycles follow favorable reviews.
Technology and software training (15%) scores subject classification: informatics, analytics, and health information technology designations in the program record. This weighting is deliberately higher than comparable indexes use, because 65% of employers in our survey named data analytics as a critical skill.
Career outcomes (10%) scores the credential eligibility the degree produces and the institutional credential ladder, meaning whether you can progress from one level to the next inside the same institution.
Cost value (10%) uses public, community, and technical college delivery as the affordability proxy, because published net price varies by residency, aid, and year in ways a national score cannot represent.
Why CAHIIM accreditation matters, and why it is only the floor
Every program we rank is CAHIIM-accredited, and that is a precondition for inclusion rather than a distinction between programs. The reason is specific and non-negotiable: graduating from a CAHIIM-accredited program is the only route to eligibility for AHIMA's RHIA and RHIT credentials. There is no experience-based alternative and no appeal. Our 2026 survey found 87% of employers required one of those credentials.
This makes accreditation the one decision in health information education that cannot be corrected afterward. A student who completes a non-accredited program has spent the money and the years and arrived somewhere the credential path does not reach, with no remedy other than starting again.
What accreditation does not tell you is whether the practicum is well organized, what the certification pass rate is, or whether the program teaches any data skills. The Program Quality Index study
The HIM Program Quality Index 2026 evaluated 189 US health information management and health informatics programs to develop and validate the seven-factor weighting used across this site. The weights above are the output of that study, and they are applied uniformly to every program in our database.
Data sources
- Program and accreditation data: CAHIIM accreditation records, covering status, review cycle, delivery format, subject area, and named program director, combined with institutional program pages.
- Wage data: BLS Occupational Employment and Wage Statistics, May 2025, primarily Medical Records Specialists, SOC 29-2072, with a national median of $51,140.
- Credential requirements: published eligibility, exam content outlines, and fee schedules from AHIMA, AAPC, HIMSS, and ACDIS.
- Outcomes and compensation ranges: our 2026 graduate survey, plus pay bands our team observes in current job postings.
The full program database is published as JSON and CSV, so anyone can check our scoring or reuse the data.
What this index cannot measure
This is the section most ranking sites omit, which is why we give it its own heading rather than a footnote.
- Teaching quality. Not published, not comparable, and not inferable from any data we hold.
- Graduate salaries by program. Self-reported by institutions where it exists, which makes it manipulable by the party being ranked.
- Job placement rates. Same problem, plus inconsistent definitions of what counts as placement.
- Admission selectivity. We do not treat it as a quality signal, because in this field it mostly measures applicant volume.
- Actual net price. Varies by residency, aid, and year. Our cost factor is a structural proxy, not a price.
- Certification pass rates by program. Genuinely useful and not consistently available in a form we can apply uniformly. Ask each program directly, and treat reluctance as an answer.
A score on this site is a research tool for narrowing a shortlist. It is not a prediction that any individual will be hired, and it should be followed by contacting programs and asking the questions above.

We accept no payment, placement fee, or lead-generation revenue from any institution, accreditor, or credentialing organization mentioned on this site. No program can pay to be included, ranked higher, or removed, and there is no mechanism by which a program could influence its score.
The visible evidence is the output: community colleges frequently outrank well-known universities in our index, because cost value and practicum are weighted while prestige is not. A site funded by institutional placement fees does not produce that ordering.
Frequently asked questions
Why do community colleges rank above famous universities?
Because cost value is weighted at 10% and institutional prestige is weighted at zero. Two CAHIIM-accredited associate programs confer identical RHIT eligibility, so an accredited program costing $9,000 genuinely outperforms one costing $45,000 on the dimension that matters to a student. A ranking that produced the conventional prestige ordering would be measuring something other than what it claims.
Why is practicum weighted so heavily?
Because it was the strongest finding in our own outcomes research. 73% of graduates in our 2026 survey called hands-on practicum experience critical or very important to their career, ranking above school reputation, above degree level, and above every other factor we measured. Weighting it second, at 17%, follows the evidence.
Why not use graduate salary data to rank programs?
Because program-level salary data in this field is self-reported by institutions, inconsistently collected, and not independently verifiable. Using it would let programs influence their own ranking by choosing how to measure. We publish aggregate salary data from our own survey instead, and keep it out of the index.
How often is the data updated?
The program database is rebuilt from accreditation data and institutional pages on a rolling basis, and every page carries its review date. Federal wage figures are BLS Occupational Employment and Wage Statistics, May 2025 and are updated when new OEWS estimates are released. Accreditation statuses change, so we recommend verifying with the accreditor before you enrol.
