HIMDegree.com publishes 17 rankings covering 328 CAHIIM-accredited health information management and health informatics programs at 287 institutions across 48 states. Rankings are organized three ways: by degree level from certificate through doctorate, by specialty including health informatics, medical coding, healthcare administration, health data analytics, and health information technology, and by modifier including online, affordable, and practicum-based programs. Every program is scored on a seven-factor Program Quality Index covering curriculum rigor (18%), practicum requirements (17%), faculty credentials (15%), accreditation status (15%), technology training (15%), career outcomes (10%), and cost value (10%). All inputs are published by institutions or their accreditor, so scores are reproducible. Last updated August 2026.
Most program rankings measure reputation, which in practice measures institutional age and size. We score documented attributes, publish the weights, and link every program to its own page so you can check the inputs. Disagree with the weighting if you like. That is a more useful argument than the one you can have with a reputation survey.
By degree level
The level you choose determines which credential you become eligible for, and that is the single most consequential decision in this field. Associate degrees lead to RHIT. Bachelor and master degrees lead to RHIA, which is what management postings ask for.

How to read any ranking on this site
A score here is a research tool for narrowing a shortlist, not a verdict and not a prediction that any individual will be hired. The programs at the top are not the programs you should attend. They are the programs whose documented attributes score highest, which is a genuinely useful starting point and nothing more.
The decisions that actually determine your outcome happen after the shortlist, and they involve talking to people. Ask each program who arranges the practicum, where recent students were placed, and how many were hired by their placement site. Ask for the certification pass rate. Count the required courses that involve hands-on work with data. Get the net cost after aid in writing. A cheaper program with strong employer relationships beats a higher-scoring one that leaves you to find your own placement, every time.
Note also what a high score does not mean. Two CAHIIM-accredited programs at the same level confer identical certification eligibility, and the exam does not know where you studied. In a field where the credential is the thing employers screen on, the marginal value of a higher-ranked accredited program is smaller than in almost any other area of higher education. That is an argument for weighting cost and practicum heavily, which is exactly what our index does.
Which ranking to start with
Depends on what you have already decided. If you know nothing yet, start with degree level, because it determines which credential you become eligible for and it is the only choice you cannot revise later.
- If you are starting from zero: accredited associate programs, the most cost-efficient entry in this field.
- If you want management: bachelor programs, because RHIA requires them and most management postings require RHIA.
- If you are working already: online programs, which are the mainstream option here rather than the compromise.
- If you want the best odds of a job: programs with practicum, the strongest predictor of outcome in our survey.
- If cost is the constraint: affordable accredited programs, since eligibility is identical regardless of price.
- If you want the data side: health informatics or health data analytics.
