Answer these five questions first

The filters below correspond to the five decisions that actually narrow this choice. Work through them in order, because the first one constrains everything after it.

1. What credential do you need? This determines degree level and it is not negotiable. RHIT requires an accredited associate degree. RHIA requires an accredited bachelor or master degree, and RHIA is what most management postings ask for.
2. Do you need to study online? 303 of our 328 programs document online availability. Online is the mainstream in this field, not a compromise, and it confers identical eligibility.
3. Do you need a placed practicum? Filter for campus-capable programs. 73% of graduates called practicum experience critical or very important, ahead of school reputation and degree level.
4. How much accreditation stability do you want? Filter to Continuing accreditation for programs that have been reviewed and reaffirmed rather than recently accredited.
5. Where are you? Geography matters less than students think, with one exception: a program with employer relationships near you is more likely to place you in a practicum.

What to ask once you have a shortlist

• Confirm CAHIIM accreditation with the accreditor directly, not from the program's marketing page.
• Does the program arrange practicum placement, or are you expected to find your own site?
• Where were recent students placed, and how many were hired by their placement site?
• What is the program's certification pass rate? Reluctance to answer is itself an answer.
• How many required courses involve hands-on work with data? Fewer than three in 2026 is a warning.
• What is the total net cost after aid, not the sticker price?
